The League 1 Championship is to compete for the title of Swiss League 1 Champions and it decides which team which participate in the round of matches for promotion to Nation League C/ relegation to National League 1. The applicable rules of the game are those of the IRB that apply for under-19s.

16 teams which are split into 2 groups- West and East- take part in the championship which consists of 3 phases :

Preliminary phase

All of the teams in each group play each other at home and away. The method of awarding points for each match played is as follows.

  • Match won : 4 pts
  • Match drawn : 2 pts
  • Match lost : 0 pt
  • 1 bonus point for having scored 4 tries or more
  • 1 bonus point for a match lost by 7 points or less
  • Withdrawal: -1 point in the table for the withdrawing team; 4 points for the winning team
  • Technical withdraw: no points in the league table for the withdrawing team; 4 points for the winning team
  • Red card: -1 point per red card starting from the 3rd one in the season

The league table classification is made according to the following criteria :

  • 1. The number of points gained
  • 2. The number of red cards
  • 3. The best team on a head-to-head basis
  • 4. The number of tries scored
  • 5. The drawing of lots

On completion of the preliminary phase, the teams that are 1st and 2nd in each group take part in the final phase.

Final phase

The final phase takes place over 2 rounds with matches on a knock-out basis. In the event of an equal number of points being scored, the following criteria are used to determine the winners.

  • 1. At the end of normal time - a. The fewest number of players sent off during the match
    - b. The greatest number of tries scored during the match
    - c. The greatest number of penalty kicks during the match
  • 2. At the end of 2 periods of extra-time 2 x 15 min
    - a. The fewest number of players sent off during the match
    - b. The greatest number of tries scored during the match
    - c. The greatest number of penalty kicks during the match
  • 3. The greatest number of successful penalty kicks

Semi-finals

The team that finishes top of the West Division plays at home against the 2nd-placed team in the East Division. The team that finishes top in the East Division plays at home against the 2nd-placed team in the West Division.

Final

The 2 winners of the semi-finals play each other on a neutral ground. The winners of the final become the Swiss League 1 Champions and take part in a National League C promotion/League 1 relegation round.

NLC promotion/League 1 relegation final

The promotion/relegation final is a match played on a neutral ground between the Swiss League 1 Champions abd the losers of the NLC relegation play-offs. In the event of an equal number of points, the following criteria apply to determine the winners.

  • 1. At the end of normal time - a. The fewest number of players sent off during the match
    - b. The greatest number of tries scored during the match
    - c. The greatest number of penalty kicks during the match
  • 2. At the end of 2 periods of extra-time 2 x 15 min

The under-19s rules of the IRB are applicable. The winner plays in the NLC Championship in the following year and the The losers will play in in League 1.
