The NLA championship determines who is to become Swiss Champion and who is to be relegated to NLB. The Laws of the game to be applied are those of the IRB.

10 teams participate in the championship which takes place in two rounds:

Qualification round

All teams play each other home and away. The method of awarding points for each match played is as follows.

  • Match won : 4 pts
  • Match drawn : 2 pts
  • Match lost : 0 pt
  • 1 bonus point for having scored four tries or above
  • 1 bonus point for a match lost by seven points or below
  • forfeit: 1 point deducted in the table for the forfeiting team; 4 points for the winning team
  • Technical forfeit: no points in the league table for the forfeiting team; 4 points for the winning team
  • Red cards: 1 point deducted per red card starting with the 3rd red card of the season.

The league table rankings are determined according to the following criteria :

  • 1. Number of points amassed
  • 2. Number of red cards
  • 3. Aggregate score of direct encounters
  • 4. Number of tries scored
  • 5. By lot

With the qualification round completed, the teams that are placed 1st to 6th take part in the final round. The 9th placed team will play a decider about promotion to NLA/relegation to NLB against the 2nd placed team of NLB. The 10th placed team will be relegated to NLB.

Final round

The final round is played in three rounds on a knock-out basis. In the event of a draw the following criteria are applied to determine the winner:

  • 1. At the end of normal time
    - a. The lower number of players sent off during the match
    - b. The higher number of tries scored during the match
    - c. The higher number of converted penalty kicks during the match
    - d. The higher number of converted penalty kicks at a penalty shoot-out (cf. art. 6.2, FSR Competition Rules)

Play-offs

The 3rd placed team plays at home against the 6th placed team. The 4th placed team plays at home against the 5th placed team.

Semi-finals

The 1st placed team plays at home against the winner of the match between 4th and 5th placed teams. The 2nd placed team plays at home against the winners of the match between 3rd and 6th placed teams.

Final

The highest placed winning semi-finalist after the qualification round plays at home against the other semi-final winners.

Final promotion to NLA/relegation to NLB

The final of promotion to NLA/relegation to NLB is to be played between the team having finished second in NLB after the qualification round and the team having finished ninth in NLA after the qualification round with the NLB team having home advantage. In the event of a draw the following criteria are applied to determine the winner:

  • 1. At the end of normal time
    - a. The lower number of players sent off during the match
    - b. The higher number of tries scored during the match
    - c. The higher number of converted penalty kicks during the match
    - d. The higher number of converted penalty kicks at a penalty shoot-out (cf. art. 6.2, FSR Competition Rules)

The winner of this match will play in NLA the following season, the other team will play in NLB.
