The NLC championship is for the title of Swiss NLC Champions and decides on the side to be promoted to NLB and those who participate in the round for NLC promotion/ relegation to the Leagues 1. RFC Bishops St.Gallen are the current title-holders. The applicable rules of the game are those of the IRB.

8 teams participate in the championship which takes place in 4 phases :

Preliminary phase

All of the teams play each other at home and away. The method of awarding points for each match played is as follows

  • Match won : 4 pts
  • Match drawn : 2 pts
  • Match lost : 0 pt
  • 1 bonus point for having scored 4 tries or more
  • 1 bonus point for a match lost by 7 points or less
  • Withdrawal: -1 point in the table for the withdrawing team; 4 points for the winning team
  • Technical withdraw: no points in the league table for the withdrawing team; 4 points for the winning team
  • Red card: -1 point per red card starting from the 3rd one in the season

The league table ranking is made according to the following criteria

  • 1. The number of points gained
  • 2. The number of red cards
  • 3. The best team on a head-to-head basis
  • 4. The number of tries scored
  • 5. The drawing of lots

On completion of the preliminary phase, the teams that are placed 1st to 6th take part in the final phase, while the 7th and 8th placed teams take part in a NLC promotion/relegation to League 1 round. The team that finishes top become Swiss NLC champions.

Final phase

The final phase is played in 3 rounds on a knock-out basis. In the event of equality in points the following criteria apply to determine the winner.

  • 1. At the end of normal time - a. The fewest number of players sent off during the match
    - b. The greatest number of tries scored during the match
    - c. The greatest number of penalty kicks during the match
  • 2. At the end of 2 periods of extra-time 2 x 15 min
    - a. The fewest number of players sent off during the match
    - b. The greatest number of tries scored during the match
    - c. The greatest number of penalty kicks during the match
  • 3. The greatest number of successful penalty kicks

Play-offs

The team in 3rd place plays at home against the 6th placed team.. The team in 4th places plays at home against the 5th placed team.

Semi-finals

The team in 1st place plays at home against the winners of the match between the 4th and 5th placed teams The 2nd placed team plays at home against the winners of the match between the 3rd and 6th placed teams

Final

The hghest placed winning semi-finalist team from the preliminary phase plays at home against the other semi-final winners.

The winners of the final are promoted to NLB.

Relegation play-off

The relegation play-off is a knock-out match, which decides on which team stays in NLC and which one plays in a NLC promotion/relegation to League 1 round. The team that finishes 7th plays at home against the team that finishes 8th. In the event of equality in points, the following criteria apply to determine the winner.

  • 1. At the end of normal time
    - a. The fewest number of players sent off during the match
    - b. The greatest number of tries scored during the match
    - c. The greatest number of penalty kicks during the match
  • 2. At the end of 2 periods of extra-time 2 x 15 min
    - a. The fewest number of players sent off during the match
    - b. The greatest number of tries scored during the match
    - c. The greatest number of penalty kicks during the match
  • 3. The greatest number of successful penalty kicks

Final for promotion to NLC/relegation to League 1

The final for promotion/relegation is a match played on a neutral ground between the Swiss League 1 champions and the losers of the NLC relegation play-off. In the event of equality in points, the following criteria apply to determine the winner.

  • 1. At the end of normal time
    - a. The fewest number of players sent off during the match
    - b. The greatest number of tries scored during the match
    - c. The greatest number of penalty kicks during the match
  • 2. At the end of 2 periods of extra-time 2 x 15 min.
    - a. The fewest number of players sent off during the match
    - b. The greatest number of tries scored during the match
    - c. The greatest number of penalty kicks during the match
  • 3. The greatest number of successful penalty kicks

The U19 IRB rules apply. The winners play the following year in the NLC championship and the losers in League 1.
