News of Rugby in Switzerland / Switzerland gets runner-up in division A
After the Swiss national 7s women’s rugby team won every game in division B of the European championship in Bosnia-Herzegovina last year and became European Champion in this category, they could prove their capability in division A this year. With the declared goal to attain a good placement in the first third and to strengthen de basis in the next years, the Swiss team travelled to Bucharest in Romania.
Already after the first games in group B on day 1 against Israel (31 to 0), Romania (24 to 5), Latvia (10 to 5) and the finale game against Malta (20 to 0) it was clear that thanks to the good preparation in the past year, Switzerland could finish the group games in first place. On the second day, they won the last group game against Czech Republic with 41 to 0 clearly too.
The semi-final against Belgium emphasized the good performance of the team and could be recorded as a victory with 15 to 0.
And all of a sudden, the Swiss girls were standing in the finale against Moldova, the team that had come down from the top ten. They were leading at half-time with 3 tries to 2. But then they couldn’t find a way to control the one outstanding player from the most eastern corner of Europe. After the 3rd scored try, with two successful conversions, Moldova won with 19 to 17 against Switzerland. Even though the goal had been more than attained, it still was bitter for the Swiss girls to hand over the final, especially because they had had good control over the game and with incredible courage and strength and the possible rise in head, still lost the suspenseful game in the end.
